Birmingham, AL – March 12, 2025—The Marnix E. Heersink Institute for Biomedical Innovation at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), in collaboration with EmbodyXR, proudly announces the launch of UAB GrandRoundsXR, a groundbreaking event that showcases how immersive technology is transforming medical education, clinical training, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
This groundbreaking event will be featured in a Life and Science documentary. It will be held in person at UAB Medical, hosted by Sean Moloney, CEO and founder of EmbodyXR and co-creator of the popular Apple Podcast series "Game Changers in Medicine," alongside Dr. Rubin Pillay, a distinguished medical futurist, Professor of Medicine, and Assistant Dean at the UAB School of Medicine.
For the first time, healthcare professionals, faculty, and learners worldwide will come together in a hybrid immersive learning environment. This event combines in-person Grand Rounds at UAB Medical Center with live multi-user VR sessions. It showcases how extended reality (XR) breaks down geographical and financial barriers, transforming medical education and team-based learning.

- The first ACCME-accredited VR CME program on Alzheimer’s Disease & Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI)
- Scenario-driven de-escalation training using the 3E methodology for managing agitated patients
- Live, multi-user VR training for outpatient nurse education featuring 3D model exploration and real-world case simulations

Round One: The First ACCME-Accredited VR CME
Advancing Continuing Medical Education (CME) in Virtual Reality with UAB Continuing Medical Education
- Topic: Early Diagnosis & Treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease & Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI)
- Format: 15-minute interactive VR session (.25 ACCME credit) in a multi-user VR lecture hall
- Features & Methodology:
- 3D biomarker visualizations for enhanced clinical understanding
- Live faculty-led discussions with real-time AI-driven inquiries
- Performance tracking through an integrated learning management system, monitoring baseline confidence, learner engagement, and post-program outcomes
- Scope: Part of a six-activity VR CME program designed to enhance diagnostic accuracy and treatment strategies
- Availability: Attendees can complete the VR CME course at any time during the day on March 20, 2025, as well as in scheduled UAB EmbodyXR CME Learner Case Study events and sessions throughout 2025, earning the first ACCME credits in XR modality

- Format: Real-world VR simulations featuring lifelike patient-nurse interactions

- Decision-tree learning models that adapt dynamically based on user responses
- Personalized learning pathways that adjust in real time
- Objective: Safe, hands-on skill-building for managing high-stress clinical encounters
Round Three: UAB Nurse Training Meetings in VR – Beyond Zoom & Borders
Revolutionizing Outpatient Nurse Training with VR & Simulation with the UAB House Calls Team
- Topic: Live VR Training Session with the UAB House Calls Team, featuring real-time multi-user VR training for outpatient nurse education
- Features & Methodology:
- Expert-Led Discussions: Medical educators and frontline nurses will explore scalable XR training solutions
- 3D Model Exploration: Topics include cross-contamination prevention, vaccine transport & storage, and patient de-escalation strategies in home healthcare
